Punta Gorda is the Southernmost town in the country and a stronghold for the Maya, Garifuna and East Indians who all offer very rich cultural infusions, Life in the south is inexpensive and so are the tours, hotels, meals and bars. Visiting a Maya village or over-night in one is a special experience. Kayakking, river tubing, jungle experiences or visiting the two Maya ruins of Lubantuun or Nim Li Punit are highlights and Nim Li Punit has the largest collection of Stellae in the country. Unlike all the other highly developed sites in the North and West of the country , these two sites are more natural and not really developed or excavated in the same way as the other sites.

Other attractions include a visit to one of the many Cacao farms, Spice farms or a day trip to Barranco (the most southerly village in Belize) which is the birthplace of Belize’s most celebrated musician Andy Palacio. He was awarded the BBC3 Award for World Music in 2008 the very year he passed away… and his music lives on. Three times a week the Maya villagers come from their remote villages by bus to the town early in the morning to present their local wares, fruit, herbs and other craft items. for sale – something no visit to Punta Gorda can be complete without — also consider a trip to the home style chocolate making factory right in town!
