Hopkins Village is one of 6 Garinagu villages in Belize, More than 70% of the population is Garinagu – with their rich culture, clothing, food and easy going friendly style. The people are often called Garifuna, although they ate officially Garinagu and the language they speak is called Garifuna. The village is a great base for fishing, snorkeling, diving as well as numerous inland options and sits close by the Cockscomb National Park. The real charm of the village lies in its local Garinagu population who are friendly and quick to take visitors out fishing or around the village. Check out the local drumming on the beach.
There is a great variety of resorts from simple to top luxury. Amazing diving is just a 45-minute boat ride from the village. Though there are other Garinagu villages, Hopkins is the best example of the original settlers handing down the traditions, culture and unique traits to the generations that followed. Some of what you see today is almost worthy of being in a time capsule. On rare occasions one or more families will hold a “dugout” over a period of a week – this is a spectacular spiritual calling where you can, while being circumspect, witness a rare insight into centuries old cultural ceremonies, which have not altered with time or location.
